The Office in 2018
Over the past year there have been a lot of rumors and reports that NBC may be looking at a reboot of the office and although the chance seem very small, I am honestly extremely excited and I would love if NBC decided to do a reboot of the show. But is it a good idea? How would The Office play in todays climate? Well, Steve Carell (Michael Scott) thinks that it might not work.
In recent interview he he told Esquire. "Because The Office is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently, and I think because of that there’s been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago. The climate’s different. I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior,” he explained. “I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today — which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”
I think that Steve Carell made some really good and important points here and I'm really not 100% sure how the office would play and how it would be perceived in today's climate. As Steve explains, a lot of Michael's behavior was very inappropriate and super wrong, but that's what the show was about. However, I do understand that a lot has happened since the show ended and we are in a different time right now and I feel like many people would not accept a show like the office in todays climate. I personally think that it is extremely important that we treat each other with dignity, kindness and respect, and I can see how a show like the office, with characters like Michael Scott might send the wrong message in a time when the things we need most is love, unity and basic human decency. However, I also believe that we should be able to laugh and not take a comedy show too seriously and I think that if there were an office reboot, they could try to do some things differently to adapt it to todays society without losing the essence of the show. I personally think that it would be amazing if in fact there was an office reboot. I feel like there are sooo many things that have happened since 2013 that it would be really interesting to see where and what the employees at Dunder Mifflin have been up to.
Like Michael Scott said, "There is no such thing as an inappropriate joke, that's why it's a joke."
